It was a rainy Tuesday morning at the “Big Rig Diner,” a classic, neon-lit truck stop nestled right off the interstate.
The air was thick with the smell of strong coffee and sizzling grease. A weary, broad-shouldered trucker slid into a vinyl booth, wiped the rain from his cap, and flagged down the new waitress.
She was bright-eyed, eager to please, and famously blonde, determined to prove she could handle the fast-paced diner crowd.
The trucker leaned back and rattled off his order with practiced ease: “I’ll take three flat tires, a pair of headlights, and a pair of running boards, darlin’.”
The waitress blinked, her pen hovering over her notepad. Not wanting to appear clueless in front of a seasoned road veteran, she smiled brightly, nodded, and hurried straight back to the kitchen.
She found the grizzled, veteran line cook flipping burgers and leaned in, whispering urgently. “Hey, that guy out there just ordered three flat tires, a pair of headlights, and a pair of running boards. What does he think this place is, an auto parts store?”
The cook chuckled, wiping his hands on his apron. “No, honey, that’s just diner slang. ‘Three flat tires’ means three pancakes. A ‘pair of headlights’ is two eggs, sunny-side up. And ‘running boards’ are two slices of crisp bacon.”
“Oh, OK!” the waitress said, her eyes lighting up with sudden, brilliant understanding. She tapped her chin, thought about it for a moment, and then confidently ladled a steaming bowl of baked beans onto a tray. She marched back out to the dining room and placed the bowl directly in front of the trucker.
The trucker stared at the beans, then looked up at her, completely bewildered. “What are the beans for, Blondie?”
She beamed with pride, completely confident in her newfound culinary logic, and replied:
“Well, I figured while you were waiting for the flat tires, headlights, and running boards, you might as well gas up!”
