It was a long, tedious red-eye flight from Los Angeles to New York, and the cabin was dimly lit with the soft hum of the engines.
Arthur, a high-powered, arrogant corporate lawyer who thought he was the smartest person in any room, found himself seated next to a young, blonde woman who looked like she just wanted to sleep.
Bored out of his mind and eager to flex his intellectual muscles, Arthur leaned over and tapped her on the shoulder. “Excuse me,” he said with a condescending smile. “Would you like to play a fun little game to pass the time?”
The blonde opened one eye, sighed politely, and shook her head. “No, thank you. I’m quite tired. I’d just like to take a nap.” She rolled over toward the window, pulling her blanket up.
But Arthur wasn’t giving up. He persisted, whispering loudly, “Come on, it’s really easy and a lot of fun! I promise.”
Again, she politely declined, closing her eyes tighter.
Arthur, convinced that his opponent was a simple blonde who wouldn’t stand a chance against his legal brain, decided to sweeten the deal to ensure he got his entertainment. “Okay, how about this,” he proposed, leaning in closer. “I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5. But if I don’t know the answer, I’ll pay you $50. It’s basically free money for you since I know everything.”
This finally caught the blonde’s attention. She figured there would be no end to this torment unless she played along, so she sat up and agreed. “Fine. You go first.”
Arthur smirked, feeling victorious already. He asked his first question: “What is the exact distance from the Earth to the Moon?”
The blonde didn’t say a word. She didn’t hesitate. She simply reached into her purse, pulled out a crisp five-dollar bill, and handed it to him. Then she lay back down and closed her eyes.
Arthur chuckled, pocketing the money. “Easy money. Okay, your turn.”
The blonde looked at him calmly and asked, “What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?”
Arthur froze. He blinked. He frowned. “Wait, what?”
“What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?” she repeated softly.
Arthur stared at her, completely baffled. He took out his laptop computer and searched all his legal references. He tapped into the in-flight Wi-Fi, searching the entire internet, Wikipedia, and even the Library of Congress database. Frustrated, he sent emails to all his co-workers, his law partners, and his old professors.
After over an hour of frantic searching, sweating profusely, and getting zero results, he finally gave up. Defeated, he gently woke the blonde and handed her a fifty-dollar bill.
The blonde politely took the $50, tucked it into her purse, and turned away to get back to sleep.
Arthur, who was more than a little frustrated and burning with curiosity, shook her shoulder again. “Wait! Before you sleep… well, so what IS the answer?”
The blonde didn’t open her eyes. She didn’t say a word. She simply reached into her purse, pulled out another five-dollar bill, handed it to the lawyer, and went back to sleep.
