Five-year-old Toby was spending the afternoon at his grandmother’s house, happily driving his toy cars across the bedroom floor. Grandma was busy dusting her collection of porcelain figurines when Toby looked up, his little brow furrowed in deep thought.
“Grandma,” he asked, his voice full of genuine curiosity, “how come you don’t have a boyfriend now that Grandpa went to heaven?”
Grandma paused, smiled warmly, and sat down on the edge of the bed. “Oh, honey,” she explained gently, “my television is my boyfriend now. I can sit right here in my bedroom and watch it all day long. The religious programs make me feel peaceful, and the comedies make me laugh. I’m perfectly happy with my TV as my boyfriend.”
Toby nodded, accepting this completely logical explanation.
A few minutes later, Grandma decided to catch her favorite afternoon show. She clicked on the television, but the screen was nothing but snowy static and rolling lines. Frustrated, she started twisting the old dials on the front, trying to force the picture into focus. When that failed, she marched behind the heavy set and started firmly whacking the back of the TV with the palm of her hand. Thwack! Thwack! Thwack! She was really giving it a good, solid pounding, hoping to jar the tubes back into place.
Just then, the front doorbell chimed.
Toby dropped his toy car and scampered down the hall to answer it. Standing on the porch was the local Minister, holding a freshly baked casserole and wearing his usual gentle, welcoming smile.
“Hello there, young man,” the Minister said kindly. “Is your grandma home?”
Toby looked up at him, his face a picture of pure, unfiltered innocence, and announced in a loud, clear voice:
Yeah, she’s in the bedroom banging her boyfriend!
The Minister’s eyes bulged. The color drained from his face, the casserole slipped from his grasp, and he collapsed in a dead faint right onto the welcome mat.
