It was a warm, sunny Saturday afternoon in the city park, and two elderly friends, Arthur and Mugley, were sitting on their usual wooden bench, enjoying the people-watching and debating the merits of different birdseed.
Suddenly, a stunning, athletic young woman in a neon sports bra and tiny running shorts jogged past them, her ponytail bouncing with every stride. Arthur couldn’t help but watch her go, and a wide, unmistakable grin slowly spread across his weathered face.
The young woman noticed, stopped in her tracks, turned around, and put her hands on her hips. She glared at him, her voice dripping with annoyance. “Excuse me,” she snapped. “Why are you staring at me and grinning like that, you creepy old pervert?”
Arthur didn’t flinch. Instead, his expression instantly softened into one of pure, grandfatherly warmth. He looked her gently in the eyes, his voice trembling with practiced, poetic sincerity, and said, “My dear, I sincerely apologize if I offended you. I wasn’t smiling at you. I was simply smiling at the beautiful thought that, no matter how chaotic and terrible the world gets, there will always be young, vibrant, pretty girls running in the summer sunshine to cheer up a lonely old man’s heart.”
The young woman’s scowl immediately melted. Her eyes softened, and a genuine, touched smile broke across her face. “Awwww,” she cooed, “you are such a sweet, lovely old man.” She leaned in, gave him a tender, lingering kiss on the cheek, patted his shoulder, and happily jogged away, feeling much better about humanity.
As soon as she was completely out of earshot, Arthur slowly turned his head to his friend. He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket, casually wiped the lipstick off his cheek, and said with a deadpan, competitive smirk:
Three to zip, Mugley. Your turn.
