It was a busy Tuesday afternoon at a bustling downtown Starbucks, and the rich aroma of roasted espresso filled the air. At a corner table sat two passionate men, Dimitri and Giovanni, deep in a heated, yet highly civilized, debate over which of their ancestral cultures was truly superior.
Over steaming triple-shot lattes, Dimitri, a proud Greek, leaned forward and tapped the table for emphasis. “Well, my friend, you cannot deny that we have the Parthenon. The pinnacle of ancient architecture and democracy.”
Giovanni, an equally proud Italian, arched his eyebrows and took a slow, deliberate sip of his macchiato. “A lovely ruin, Dimitri. But we have the Colosseum. The ultimate symbol of engineering, grandeur, and spectacle.”
Dimitri wasn’t backing down. “Ah, but we Greeks gave birth to advanced mathematics, philosophy, and the very foundations of Western thought!”
Giovanni nodded in polite, yet condescending, agreement. “True, you had the theories. But we built the Roman
Empire. We gave the world aqueducts, paved roads, and concrete. We turned your theories into a functioning civilization.”
The debate raged on, volleying back and forth through centuries of art, cuisine, and literature, until Dimitri suddenly sat back with a triumphant, self-satisfied grin. He believed he had finally found the ultimate, unassailable trump card to end the discussion forever.
With a dramatic flourish of his hands, Dimitri declared, “Forget architecture and empires! We Greeks invented sex!”
The café seemed to quiet down for a split second. Giovanni paused, his cup halfway to his mouth. He thought for a couple of seconds, his expression shifting from defensive to deeply, quietly amused. He set his cup down, looked
Dimitri dead in the eye, and replied with absolute, deadpan serenity:
“That is true, my friend. But it was the Italians who introduced it to women.”
