Two elderly gentlemen, Arthur and Walter, were sitting on a sunny park bench on a crisp Tuesday afternoon, contentedly watching the world go by. A very energetic, fast-walking young woman jogged past them, full of life and vitality.
Arthur sighed wistfully, leaning heavily on his cane. “Boy, I sure wish I had the energy to keep up with the young folks these days.”
Walter nodded in solemn, weary agreement. “Me too, Arthur. But my energy just doesn’t work like it used to. The old engine is sputtering, and I can’t seem to get it going anymore.”
Arthur leaned in closer, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial whisper. “Don’t you know how to keep that vitality up?”
Walter shook his head, genuinely curious. “No, how do you do that?”
“You have to eat a lot of French bread,” Arthur stated with absolute, unwavering confidence. “It’s a well-known fact among us seniors.”
Taking this bizarre medical advice to heart, Walter hobbled down to the local artisan bakery. He proceeded to purchase one hundred fresh, crusty loaves of French bread, stacking them precariously in his shopping cart until it looked like he was preparing for a carb-loading marathon.
When he finally reached the checkout counter, the young cashier looked at the mountain of baguettes, then up at Walter’s hopeful face, and asked with genuine, practical concern:
“Sir, don’t you know that’s going to get hard before you can possibly eat all of that?”
Walter’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated astonishment. He leaned over the counter, his voice dropping to an amazed whisper:
“Oh! You’ve heard about that too?!”
