It was a bright, cheerful Tuesday morning in Mrs. Higgins’ third-grade classroom, and she had decided to start the day with a little creative exercise. Instead of a boring, traditional roll call, she asked each student to stand up and introduce themselves with a short, rhyming poem. The class was thrilled, and the energy in the room was buzzing with anticipation.
The very first student to be called was Timothy, the undisputed teacher’s pet who sat in the front row. He stood up straight, adjusted his glasses, and recited with perfect, eager enthusiasm:
“My name is Tim,
and when I grow up, I’m going to win.
I’d like to travel to Japan if I can,
and I think I can!”
Mrs. Higgins beamed, clapping softly. “Wonderful, Timothy! Very creative.”
Next, she called on sweet little Suzy, who sat right in the middle of the room. Suzy stood up, smoothed her dress, and answered the roll call with a bright, innocent smile:
“My name is Suzy,
and when I grow to be a lady,
I would like to have a baby if I can,
and I think I can!”
The class giggled at her adorable honesty, and Mrs. Higgins chuckled warmly, marking her present on the clipboard.
Then, Mrs. Higgins’ eyes drifted to the back of the room. It was Little Johnny’s turn. Johnny, the class’s resident quick-witted troublemaker, slowly stood up. He shoved his hands into his pockets, looked around the room with the confident swagger of a seasoned poet, and cleared his throat.
He looked directly at the teacher and declared:
“My name is Johnny,
and I don’t give a damn about Japan,
but I would be happy to help Suzy with her plan,
if I can…
and I think I can!”
